About Spinal Cord Injury Ontario

Spinal Cord Injury Ontario (SCIO) is a leading provincial non-profit organization that supports people living with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities. Through advocacy, peer support, and rehabilitation services, SCIO empowers individuals to achieve independence, inclusion, and full community participation.

About the Project

SCIO’s legacy website presented significant accessibility barriers, lacked intuitive navigation, and failed to support their growing content and fundraising needs effectively. They required a comprehensive redesign to ensure full compliance with AODA and WCAG 2.1 AA standards, robust bilingual content support, and seamless integration with Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge for improved donor management and streamlined online fundraising.

Objectives

Improve the overall user experience (UX) and mobile responsiveness of the site.

Integrate and customize Raiser's Edge for seamless donor journeys.

Strengthen brand alignment across all digital campaign assets.

Ensure full compliance with WCAG and AODA accessibility standards, and deliver the website in both English and French.

Fringe Media's Approach

Fringe Media worked in close collaboration with SCIO’s marketing and communications department and a network of third-party strategists to deliver a website that not only met but exceeded the organization’s digital objectives. Our team served as an extension of SCIO’s internal staff—translating strategic goals into actionable design and development solutions. Through collaborative planning sessions, iterative reviews, and user-focused testing, we ensured every decision supported SCIO’s mission to educate, empower, and engage its diverse audience online.

Accessible Design and UX/UI
In collaboration with lead designer Kathleen Easton, Fringe Media redefined SCIO’s user experience and content structure, focusing on intuitive navigation, readability, and accessibility compliance (AODA / WCAG 2.1 AA). The redesign introduced optimized keyboard navigation, properly structured headings, descriptive alternative text, accessible colour contrast, and compliant form elements to ensure equitable access for all users.

Robust CMS Implementation
The new WordPress CMS, enhanced with Elementor Pro, allows SCIO’s internal team to independently manage content, update pages, and build new sections with ease. Structured content templates and reusable design blocks support long-term scalability, accessibility, and visual consistency across the site.

Seamless Raiser’s Edge Integration
Fringe Media configured and styled Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge NXT and Luminate Online donation forms directly within the website, creating a frictionless experience for donors and real-time synchronization with SCIO’s CRM.

Mega Menu Navigation
A custom mega menu was designed to accommodate SCIO’s extensive content and resources. The reorganized site structure grouped related topics into clearly defined, easy-to-scan categories, improving navigation and reducing friction for visitors across all devices.

Ideas, Designed & Delivered

The new SCIO website embodies accessibility, usability, and flexibility—empowering the organization to manage content, campaigns, and bilingual updates independently. Its robust infrastructure and CRM integrations have transformed SCIO’s digital fundraising capabilities, enabling a more engaging and seamless donor experience across all campaigns.
